Remarks at a Fundraising Luncheon for Senator Alfonse M. D'Amato in New York, New York

You've done that. Thank you. [Applause] There are no words properly to thank you, but just from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all very much. And Al D'Amato, Senator, I thank you. Thank you, John Bierwirth. It's wonderful to be here in New York today and very good to see all of you -- some old friends and now some new.

I know you're about to lunch, and I don't want to take too much time up here. I want to be direct and get to the heart of my message and then take my seat. I considered starting with humor -- something like it's a pleasure to be here and give a little help to D'Amato -- [laughter] -- after all, that's what he gives me in the Senate. [laughter] Then, you know how every once in a while a line from a song will get in your head and you just can't get them out. They keep going over and over again, kind of way up here. That was happening to me -- you say "D'Am-a-to" and I say "D'Am-a-to." [Laughter] It reminded me of how Harry Belafonte said, "Let's call the whole thing off." [Laughter]

Two LI Reps want a new deal for Internet gambling...

On today's New York Post op-ed page, Long Island Congressmen Peter King and Steve Israel co-author a piece -- in which they argue for an end to the ban on Internet gaming but support fines and license revocation for Web sites that don't enforce against improper use.

Another Long Island political presence, former Senator Al D'Amato, is a lobbyist for the poker players' alliance, which is on the same side of the issue.

Well, the Poker Player's Alliance has chimed in and they not only agree that we should do just that, write to Congress, but they also say that doing so right now, while Congress is in a recess is an optimal time to do so. They definitely have the credibility to make this opinion as their chairman, former Senator, Alfonse D'Amato is telling us so. He knows his way around the Washington political calendar, and this week he came up with some interesting ideas to turn the autumn recess of the US Congress into an opportunity for online gamblers to let their representatives know how they feel about online gambling regulation. He sent a mass letter to all PPA members, all 700,000 of them, urging them to take action.
